Gavin Maxwell - Movement and Theatre
Hello, hello, thanks for visiting my site - So a bit about me.
I am a theatre-maker, performer, movement director and practitioner specialising in physical and devised theatre. My work spans theatre, film, and community projects, with a strong commitment to adaptability and collaboration across forms and settings.
For over eight years I have worked internationally with Frantic Assembly, delivering workshops, residencies, and co-directing their flagship outreach project Ignition (2019, 2022, 2025). I was also an associate on I Think We Are Alone, written by Sally Abbott, collaborating with Tea Films to capture the production on screen for streaming. Alongside my theatre practice, I also create films and work as a videographer, blending my interest in visual storytelling with live performance.
As Co-Artistic Director of GymJam Theatre (2019–2025), I developed playful and politically urgent work. Our production Anthropocene (co-produced with Oxford Playhouse) won an OFFIE Award, streamed globally, and was praised for its innovation in climate storytelling.
I work extensively with Vamos Theatre, the UK’s leading full mask company. I most recently toured with Boy on the Roof (2023), a production exploring undiagnosed ADHD, and co-directed/facilitated their 2025 Elevate emerging artists project. With Vamos I also co-developed Empathising with ADHD, a workshop commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and regularly deliver Devising with Mask and Mask Technique workshops in a variety of settings.
As a movement director, I collaborate widely across styles and forms. Recent projects include: The Pied Piper: A Hip Hop Family Musical with the Beatbox Academy (Battersea Arts Centre), and a contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion in Alberta, Canada, with playwright Jesse Ardren.
Wellbeing and community engagement are central to my practice. As a neurodivergent artist, I am a passionate advocate for inclusive practice in the arts. Whether in rehearsal rooms, on tour, or in community spaces, my work is rooted in physical storytelling, play, and creating environments where all bodies and voices can thrive.
